We all know how hard it is to get everything right, and that old adage about working with animals and children, certainly applies to horses too.

Here we advise how to choose the best picture for Horsephotoshows, and not just for entries in our shows but to taking good photographs in general.

Bond between horse and rider
Bond between horse and rider

This picture has quite a busy background, but we think on this occasion it adds to the atmosphere. What makes this picture special is the bond between the horse and rider. A moment of satisfied contentment and why a picture is worth a 1,000 words.

Horse and handler
Horse and handler

This picture is of a two-year-old who was being shown at a county show. The background could have been better, but he is standing fairly square and both the horse and handler are well turned out.

Casual horse and handler

This is the same horse and handler as above, but in this picture the horse isn’t standing very well and the handler looks very casual. Whilst the judge will still have a good impression of what the horse looks like, it isn’t such an eye catching picture as the previous one.

How cute would this foal be with a different background? It is still a perfectly acceptable picture to enter, but if you are taking pictures specifically, remember to think about your background.
